I ordered a new set of dining chairs a few months ago. They arrived at the house in large boxes. I was very excited about what was IN the boxes! My 6-year-old daughter had a different view. She was excited about what she could DO with the boxes!
When it comes to creativity, it seems that children are able to tap into their creative sides more readily than adults. Why is that? I believe their creativity flows so easily because they pay attention. Everything is new to them so they enjoy the little things. The everyday stuff we as adults take for granted or view as a nuisance (like large boxes), simply amazes children. After seeing the same things over and over again, it can be difficult to train our adult brains to take a creative approach.
No, I was not excited about the boxes themselves. I saw them as a means to an end — new chairs for my dining room! My daughter saw a rocket ship, a changing room and a kiddie couch. And of course, she needed a willing assistant to help bring her creative vision to life. As I cut out windows for the rocket ship and colored the sides with magic marker, I was reminded that creativity is necessary in every part of our lives. It helps us solve problems on the job, come up with new date ideas, create apps, start businesses, etc.
If you are creatively stuck in one area, tap into a different stream of creativity. Make something, build something, sculpt something, draw something. Pay more attention to your surroundings. Rejuvenate your creative flow by drawing inspiration from other sources. A fresh, creative perspective may be just what you need.
